After five years and three turkey truck crashes in Henry County, PETA and Circle S Ranch appear to have reached some common ground. PETA wants everyone to stop eating turkeys to end the animals’ suffering and the turkey company is in the business of transporting turkey’s to slaughter for people to eat, so it’s not surprising the negotiation was long and drawn out. Circle S Ranch has agreed, according to PETA, to train their turkey truck drivers how to minimize the suffering of turkeys who are involved in future crashes and develop relationships with veterinarians in areas where they transport turkeys so they can call on them for professional assistance if needed. According to the National Turkey Federation, the average American eats 16 pounds of turkey a year and 88 percent of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving. 736 million pounds of turkey are consumed in the United States every year. That figure is up 104 percent since 1970. Over a quarter of a billion turkeys are produced in the United States alone accounting for an industry that employs 25,000 people.
